Inclusive Publishing

The Publishers Association has brought together publishers, individuals, authors and organisations to show you where to turn to easily improve the inclusivity of your company. This could be ensuring that your company is made up of a workforce representative of the UK demography, using books in schools to inspire young people that writing and story-telling is a career for them, finding the best authors and illustrators, finding and promoting a range of titles or supporting specialist publications.

We've collated a bank of resources below to help those in the publishing industry create, maintain and improve their inclusivity practices and help to make the UK publishing industry truly representative of its audience – that audience might be broader than you think…

Guide to a Representative Publishing Industry

The lack of diversity in the creative industries has come under the spotlight in the past couple of years. Publishing is undoubtedly much more willing than ever before to tackle the issue of diversity.

 Suggestions and pledges for inclusive action

Spare Room Project

For job-seekers looking to complete a short-term internship or work experience, the cost of staying in London for a week can be prohibitive. To break down those barriers, we teamed up with James Spackman to match publishers who have Spare Rooms in their houses with interns needing a place to stay. Read this blog and this blog from Spare Room alumni about how useful they found the experience, and find out more information here. If you have a spare room, get in touch with James, or mention the scheme to work experience applicants from outside London.

 Internship Guidelines

The time and effort taken to employ an intern or accept a new entrant for work experience puts some publishers off or pushes employers into handing on the same old photocopying jobs to interns.  We've worked on some guidelines with The Bookseller for publishers to work to, ensuring that the employee and the employer get the most out of a placement.

The Business Case for Inclusive Publishing

Chris McCrudden has done the hard work for us, and delved into Global Web Index to identify the potential audience for inclusive books. Looking at the market from a convincing and thorough data-led approach, this set of slides should be shown to anyone in publishing who questions the existence of an audience for diverse content.

The EQUIP charter

The EQUIP (Equality in Publishing) charter sets out achievable recommendations for companies wishing to improve their equality programme. From appointing an equalities champion, to advertising all jobs externally, charter members will receive advice and an opportunity to demonstrate their willingness to improve diversity in the publishing industry.

 The Everybody In charter

The Everybody In charter is designed to inspire and motivate those in the children’s book world to take action to achieve true inclusion in their books. We all know that it’s vital that every child can find themselves in books, as well as seeing others. But it’s not always easy to know where to start or how to achieve authentic inclusion without resorting to stereotypes. The Everybody In charter is designed to support signatories, offering practical and achievable suggestions to ensure real change. Signatories agree with four statements of intent and select three actions to work on. Some actions have been suggested, but signatories are free to write their own. Advice and examples of how the actions can be fulfilled according to your sector or area of work can be found on the relevant guidance pages.
